Tomsk State University (TSU) and the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IG RAS) have installed an automated weather station (AWS) on the Aktru glacier, located near the highest point of the North Chuysky Range — Mount Aktru-Bash in the Altai Republic. This was reported by the press service of TSU.
The weather station complex includes modern high-precision sensors that record incoming and reflected solar radiation, as well as thermal radiation from the atmosphere and ice surface.
The weather station was installed on a large stone located above the glacier surface at an altitude of 3.6 thousand meters above sea level. This ensures maximum openness of the horizon. The surrounding mountains do not shade the device and have practically no effect on the parameters of solar radiation, which makes the data more accurate.
The data from the AWS will be used not only in the research conducted by the university's glaciologists, but also as part of the task of developing parameterization of mountain glaciation and snow cover of the Earth, which in the future will be integrated into the domestic model of the Earth system of the Institute of Numerical Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences - Moscow State University. The introduction of this model will significantly refine the results of modeling river runoff and changes in the level of the World Ocean, as well as the regional climatic response caused by mountain glaciers.
