Russia's Nuclear Fleet is Growing: Two More Icebreakers to be Laid Down by the End of 2026

The President of the Russian Federation instructed to consider the construction of ships of project 22220

By the end of 2025, Russia will decide on the start of construction of two more nuclear icebreakers of project 22220. Such an instruction was given by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin following a working trip to Murmansk.

Ensure the formation of the necessary icebreaker fleet for the period up to 2035 and for the future up to 2050, determining the sources of financing for the relevant activities, making decisions no later than 2026 on the start of construction of the seventh and eighth serial universal nuclear icebreakers of project 22220.

The head of the Russian government Mikhail Musustin and the chairman of the state corporation Rosatom Alexei Likhachev have been appointed responsible. The deadline for completion is August 1, 2025.

Icebreakers of the LK-60Ya type of project 22220 are a series of universal nuclear icebreakers for operation in the Arctic Ocean. The index LK-60Ya stands for "icebreaker with a nuclear power plant with a capacity of 60 megawatts." They are designed to serve the Northern Sea Route and expeditions in the Arctic.
