On May 16, the keel-laying ceremony of the new Project 12700 Alexandrite-class minesweeper, named after Hero of Russia Sergey Preminin, will take place at the Sredne-Nevsky Shipbuilding Plant (part of USC). This is already the 14th ship of this series, confirming the demand for the project in the Navy.
Project 12700 was developed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau and is distinguished by the use of a monolithic fiberglass hull, which reduces magnetic signature and increases survivability. Ships of this type are equipped with robotic systems, including remotely operated underwater vehicles for searching and destroying mines. The new minesweeper will join the Northern Fleet, where it will perform tasks to ensure safe navigation.
