In the near future, the Brazilian authorities will announce the start of construction of small modular reactors in cooperation with the Russian State Corporation Rosatom, according to the Minister of Mines and Energy of Brazil, Alexandre Silveira.
According to the minister, the implementation of this project will ensure the environmental safety of the Amazon region and replace thermal power plants operating on fuel oil.
Vladimir Putin instructed Rosatom to start interacting with the Brazilian government as soon as possible so that we can move on to the development of small nuclear reactors, which will be important for the future of our energy sector.
Silveira also stressed the importance of cooperation with Russia in completing the construction of the third power unit of the Angra nuclear power plant in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Rosatom has expressed its readiness to complete this project and participate in the construction of new nuclear power plants in Brazil.
Earlier, the Kremlin hosted talks between the presidents of Russia and Brazil, Vladimir Putin and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
