New silicone ligatures developed in Russia will help maintain dental health while wearing braces

Innovation from Novgorod University will simplify oral hygiene

Unique silicone ligatures for braces that change color when plaque accumulates have been developed in Veliky Novgorod. The innovation will help patients better monitor their dental hygiene and reduce the number of visits to the doctor, according to the project's author, Victoria Zhukova.

According to her, maintaining clean teeth with orthodontic appliances can be difficult, especially in hard-to-reach places. The new ligatures serve as a visual indicator, signaling the need for thorough cleaning.

The devices are made of a special silicone that changes color depending on the pH level in the mouth. If the acidity level rises due to food residue, the ligature changes its shade, warning of plaque accumulation.

The ligatures are easy to install and remove, making them convenient to use. In addition, they are available in various colors, which is especially attractive to young people.
