В мае 2025 года Землю ожидают несколько магнитных бурь: прогноз российских астрономов

Weak magnetic storms are possible on certain days of May, which may affect well-being and the operation of equipment

In May 2025, the Earth is expected to experience several periods of increased geomagnetic activity. According to the forecast for mid-latitudes (Moscow time, UTC+03), the month will have both calm days and periods of magnetic storms that may affect people's well-being and the operation of equipment.

Geomagnetic activity is assessed using the Kp index — an international scale reflecting the degree of disturbance of the Earth's magnetic field. Kp values range from 0 to 9: the higher the value, the stronger the disturbance. Magnetic storms are classified as follows: a Kp value of 5 indicates a weak storm (G1), Kp 6 — a moderate storm (G2), Kp 7 — a strong storm (G3), Kp 8 — a very strong storm (G4), and Kp 9 corresponds to an extreme storm (G5).

The first wave of geomagnetic disturbances is expected in early May. From the 2nd to the 7th, the Kp index will reach a level corresponding to a weak magnetic storm. The most intense days — May 2, 5, 6 and 7 — may be accompanied by a deterioration in the well-being of weather-sensitive people, as well as minor disruptions in radio communications and navigation systems.

From May 8 to 10, the magnetosphere will remain in an excited state, but geomagnetic activity will be below the threshold values for a magnetic storm. Starting from May 11 and until the middle of the month, the situation will stabilize, and the magnetic field will return to a calm state.

The second wave of activity is forecast for the period from May 17 to 21. At this time, an excited state of the magnetosphere is again expected, but the intensity will be moderate and will not lead to the development of a full-fledged magnetic storm. However, weather-sensitive people may feel a weak influence of changes in the geomagnetic background.

Towards the end of the month, on May 28, another surge in geomagnetic activity is forecast. On this day, a weak (G1) magnetic storm is expected, which may again affect well-being and the stability of some technical systems. After that, the magnetic environment will remain calm until the end of the month.

Experts recommend paying attention to your well-being during days of increased geomagnetic activity, avoiding excessive physical exertion, and adjusting your daily routine if necessary. It is also worth considering possible short-term interruptions in communication and navigation equipment.
