Modern 2EP21/22 Electric Locomotives to be Developed in 2026

New electric locomotives will replace EP20 analogs

The Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Plant (NEVZ, part of Transmashholding) will develop dual-system electric locomotives with asynchronous drive 2EP21/22. The locomotives are planned to be released in 2026, according to the company's press service.

According to Dmitry Pegov, Deputy General Director of Russian Railways, the EP22 series electric locomotives are planned to be used for driving 24 push-pull trains (consisting of a locomotive and wagons with a tail control cab) on the route between Moscow and St. Petersburg. The EP21 series electric locomotives, with a design speed of 160 km/h, are planned to be used for 58 trains on other sections of the Russian Railways network.

The four-axle locomotives of the EP21 and EP22 series will replace the EP20 models using technologies from the French company Alstom. The first technical details about the new models were published by the traction directorate of Russian Railways in March of this year.

Technical characteristics of 2EP21/22 electric locomotives:

  • Speed — 160-200 km/h.
  • Hourly power — 9600 kW.
  • Traction force — 430 kN.

Earlier www1.ru reported that the first DP2D diesel train "left" for testing.
