"Marathon-2.0": MAI is developing satellites for simplified access to space

The new platform will allow flexible adaptation of space equipment for various industries

The Space Technology Center of the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) is creating the second generation of the "Marathon-IoT" satellite constellation - the "Marathon-2.0" platform. The new development will allow industrial enterprises, agricultural producers and other customers to flexibly customize the functionality of spacecraft for their tasks.

The platform differs from its predecessor with modernized sensors, units and battery systems, which increases the efficiency and service life of satellites.

The goal of the project is to create a universal solution that will be in demand for decades. A prototype of the device has already been developed, tests are underway and design documentation is being prepared for prototypes. The project is being implemented jointly with JSC "Reshetnev" (part of Roscosmos).

The key feature of "Marathon-2.0" is modularity. Customers will be able to choose the necessary options: optical sensing, communication, data monitoring through sensors. This will eliminate the need to purchase satellites with fixed functionality.

The platform will be part of the "Sphere" program group, which will deploy more than 250 small devices weighing up to 50 kg each in orbit by 2030. Satellites will be placed at an altitude of 750 km in 12 orbital planes, providing global coverage for the Internet of Things (IoT).
