Sunken parts of the "Volgoneft" tankers will remain underwater for at least a year — they will be hidden under cofferdams

The commission approved a plan to eliminate the fuel oil spill using modern engineering solutions

The commission for the elimination of the fuel oil spill in the Krasnodar Territory approved a strategy to raise the sunken parts of two ships from the bottom of the Black Sea. The fuel oil is planned to be pumped out this year, and the sunken parts will remain underwater until the end of the year.

Our goal is to localize the sunken parts with cofferdams before the start of the autumn storms to prevent fuel oil from entering the open sea. Next year, when we receive the technologies, we will try to ensure the lifting of both the cofferdams and all three sunken parts.
Roman Starovoit, Minister of Transport

As part of the approved plan, cofferdams (watertight cofferdams) will be built to cover the sunken parts of the ships. Fuel oil will be pumped out through special hatches.

We are looking for optimal methods to facilitate the process of pumping out petroleum products.
Vitaly Savelyev, Deputy Prime Minister

The Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, Roman Starovoit, assured that after the completion of the fuel oil pumping, the sunken parts of the ships will be raised using standard technologies.

The tankers "Volgoneft-212" and "Volgoneft-239" crashed on December 15, 2024 in the Kerch Strait, which led to a spill of petroleum products and pollution of the coast of the Krasnodar Territory.
