Scientists at Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) have developed a unique technology for joining dissimilar materials (such as aluminum and steel) using high-speed collision.
The method is called magnetic pulse welding, and its main advantage is that the workpieces are accelerated to several hundred meters per second using a strong electromagnetic field. This allows creating a strong weld in fractions of a microsecond, without the formation of brittle chemical compounds between the materials.
This approach differs from the traditional explosive method, which is used to join materials such as aluminum and steel, and does not require special conditions, hazardous substances, or proving grounds. Magnetic pulse welding is much safer, more environmentally friendly, and faster, making it attractive to industry. The technology will be useful in areas such as automotive engineering, electronics manufacturing, and instrument engineering, as well as for joining pipes made of various materials.
