St. Petersburg is considering an initiative to introduce a speed limit for car-sharing vehicles.
Last year, the number of accidents involving rented cars increased by 17%, and the number of fatalities in such accidents almost doubled. In 2024, 14 people died in such accidents, and 181 people were injured.
According to deputies, in order to reduce risks, car-sharing cars should be technically limited in speed so as not to exceed the set limit.
As a measure, it is proposed to introduce an electronic speed limiter at the level of 60-80 km/h, as is done for electric scooters. This restriction is designed to reduce the number of accidents in which inexperienced drivers who have recently obtained a license often participate.
Such measures could be an important step in combating the increase in the number of road accidents in St. Petersburg. In 2024, road deaths in the city increased by 14%, and a total of 148 people died in accidents during the year.
