The United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) faces a serious challenge. The long-term development strategy approved by the Board of Directors stipulates that the corporation must produce 750 ships by 2036, while the actual need is 2300 units.
If current production rates continue, Russian shipyards will be able to build only 200–250 ships by 2036, according to Andrey Buzinov, Deputy General Director of USC. To achieve the production target of 750 ships by 2036, the corporation is considering a transition to mass production, which will significantly increase the volume of ships produced.
Currently, the existing business model in shipbuilding, according to the USC representative, has become planned unprofitable. Buzinov noted that shipyards, acting as the main contractors, assume all the risks associated with the cooperation of suppliers. High infrastructure maintenance costs make any delay in deliveries critical, which leads to a decrease in profitability and postponement of delivery dates.
From 2011 to 2022, USC enterprises were able to produce only 201 civilian vessels.
