New Cruise Liner to Be Created Based on the "Ivan Papanin" Military Icebreaker

Project 23550 vessel will be capable of sailing even in tropical latitudes

An Arctic cruise liner and research vessel are planned to be developed based on the "Ivan Papanin" military icebreaker. This was announced by the chief designer of project 23550, Boris Leikis.

The hull and power plant have already been manufactured, tested, and can be transferred to both a cruise liner and a supply vessel, a research vessel.

He did not rule out that an entire line of vessels for various purposes could be created. Leikis added that the new cruise liner will be able to sail in tropical latitudes.

Icebreaker "Ivan Papanin" - the lead ship of project 23550. It was built at JSC "Admiralty Shipyards" for the Russian Navy. Project 23550 - a new stage in the construction of ice-class ships. They are designed to protect Arctic water resources, escort and tow detained vessels, and support supply vessels.

Main characteristics of the ship

Displacement of about 9 thousand tons. Unlimited navigation area. Economic speed (at which the ship most efficiently consumes fuel) is about 10 knots, full speed is about 18 knots. The ship is equipped with modern weapons and the ability to base a helicopter. The contract for its construction was signed on April 25, 2016.
