Korean company Hyundai Motor Company has obtained the rights to design new cars and components under the Hyundai brand in Russia, ending a dispute with South Korean concern Hyundai Construction Equipment, which registered its trademark for car design a year earlier.
Due to the similarity of the names, the Federal Service for Intellectual Property rejected Hyundai Motor Company's application, as there was a threat of confusion between the brands. However, on January 10, the Chamber of Patent Disputes ruled that the Hyundai and Hyundai Construction Equipment marks could coexist in Russia.
Although obtaining design rights does not mean an immediate resumption of car production in Russia, this step allows Hyundai to combat piracy by preventing the creation of companies with similar names. In 2023, the company filed 18 applications for registration of trademarks for auto components and accessories for both the main brand and Genesis cars.
