A Way to Dispose of Dichloroethane Found in Irkutsk

Vinyl ethers obtained after processing are planned to be used in medicine

The Irkutsk Institute of Chemistry (FIC IrIC SB RAS) presented an innovative method for the disposal of 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) using alcohol solvents. This was reported in the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

The new approach makes it possible to get rid of the toxic substance and produce vinyl ethers. They can be used in medicine and the production of paints and varnishes.

To solve the problem of DCE disposal, Irkutsk chemists proposed using it as a starting compound for the synthesis of vinyl ethers in demand in medicine and paints and varnishes. Scientists have shown that DCE easily reacts with alcohols in a superbasic system, giving various vinyl ethers in good yield.

The study was conducted using spectroscopy methods.

Organochlorine compounds such as DCE pose a serious threat to the environment, as they pollute soil and water resources. The problem of dichloroethane disposal arose in the last century, but there were no modern technologies for its disposal.

Earlier www1.ru reported that in Tomsk they came up with a method for cleaning soils from oil and salt pollution.
