The Russian S-500 Prometheus air defense system is "on paper" capable of hitting hypersonic missiles, American-made F-22 and F-35 stealth aircraft, as well as low-orbit satellites. This is according to military expert Brandon Weichert in an article for 19fortyfive.
With a range of up to 372 miles and the latest radar systems, the S-500 surpasses its predecessors in speed and target acquisition. At the same time, the systems deployed in Crimea have shown mixed results.
As 19fortyfive writes, the S-500 is ineffective against ATACMS missiles and some types of drones. Despite this, the Russian complex has great export potential. It could be sold to India or China.
This is an experimental system that the Russians are still developing. Nevertheless, underestimating this system is a foolish move. The S-500 is one of Russia's most important and advanced weapons systems.
