Rosatom has begun installing key nuclear power plant safety equipment — a core catcher at power unit No. 3 of the El Dabaa NPP in Egypt. This was reported by the country's Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA).
The reactor core catcher is one of the key elements of the El Dabaa NPP safety system, as it reflects the highest level of nuclear safety to ensure the safe and continuous operation of the El Dabaa NPP, and is a unique protection system that is installed under the bottom of the reactor vessel to increase the safety and security of the station.
The core localization device is an innovative Russian development. It allows preventing molten radioactive materials from the reactor from entering the environment.
The core catcher is a steel conical container weighing 150 tons. It is installed at the bottom of the concrete reactor shaft.
It is worth noting that the El Dabaa NPP will include 4 power units of 1.2 thousand megawatts each. They will be equipped with Russian VVER-1200 class water-cooled reactors. Russia will build the nuclear power plant and supply nuclear fuel throughout the entire life of the station.
Earlier www1.ru reported that at the Leningrad NPP they are concreting the "nuclear island".
