The Central Bank plans to launch the widespread use of the digital ruble from July 1, 2025. Banks must prepare the infrastructure to support transactions with the digital ruble, and companies must make payments. The regulator has sent this proposal to the Ministry of Finance of Russia.
The deadlines for introducing the digital ruble into circulation were proposed to be set depending on the amount of revenue of companies. In particular, companies with revenue exceeding 30 million rubles must accept payment in digital rubles from July 1, 2025.
If a company has revenue exceeding 20 million rubles, the deadlines for introducing the digital ruble are shifted to July 1, 2026. The remaining companies will provide citizens with the opportunity to pay with the digital ruble from July 1, 2027.
Russian authorities launched a pilot project for the digital ruble in August 2023. At the initial stage, 12 banks participated in it. Since September 2024, about 10 thousand more participants have joined the pilot.
