Bio-acquiring Reaches a New Level: Sber Expands Access to Biometrics to Other Banks

Sberbank Launches Interbank Biometric Payment, Intensifying Competition in the Market

Sberbank plans to open its biometric payment network to customers of other banks by the end of the year, which promises to intensify competition in the payment services market. This was announced by Dmitry Malykh, Head of Transactional Banking at Sberbank, at the international PLUS-Forum "Payment Business and Money Circulation".

From December, users who are not Sber customers will be able to pay for purchases in its acquiring network through biometric identification, using accounts from other banks. Since September, Sberbank customers have been able to pay for goods and services through accounts from other banks.

The Central Bank is also testing a pilot project that provides for the possibility of payment from accounts of various banks, supporting the development of interbank bio-acquiring.

Experts note a number of difficulties hindering the active spread of technology. These include: concerns of citizens regarding the security of personal data, complex regulations that complicate the process for customers, and the reluctance of banks to connect to a system dominated by one major player, which creates the risk of dependence on Sberbank.
