SOS call from ERA-GLONASS successfully transmitted from Mount Elbrus

The system is capable of tracking the movement of a group of climbers in real time

A team of specialists from JSC GLONASS has successfully tested a new service to improve the safety of tourist groups using the ERA-GLONASS system. As part of the experiment, which took place during the ascent of Mount Elbrus, the expedition was equipped with trackers with SOS buttons connected to the state information system.

During the testing, emergency messages were sent from various heights as they climbed. The ERA-GLONASS system processed them in a matter of seconds.

Elements of a hybrid communication network based on the state information system were used, and prototypes of trackers were tested to ensure data transmission via mobile channels and a low-power radio network.

Alexey Raikevich, General Director of JSC GLONASS, noted that the experiment confirmed the prompt transmission of calls and coordinates from the tourist group along the entire route to the summit at an altitude of 5642 meters. The monitoring platform based on ERA-GLONASS allowed real-time tracking of the group's movement and control points. This solution helps to identify problems at an early stage, even without receiving an emergency call, which allows for faster assistance. If the group does not pass the checkpoints on time or deviates from the route, the ERA-GLONASS system transmits the current coordinates to rescuers to check the situation.

Testing Russian technology on tourist routes opens up opportunities for its scaling in the interests of developing domestic tourism in Russia. Based on the results of the experiments, a final version of the security system for tourist groups will be formed. Currently, ERA-GLONASS transmits emergency calls from cars to regional 112 systems, and emergency messages from tourists will be sent to rescue services in a similar way.
