Handles Everything from Needles to Hammers: Russia Develops New "Grasp" Hand Prosthesis

The product has an original geometric shape and a special relief on the inner surface of the attachment

Previously, only the German company Ottobock produced similar prostheses worldwide. For Russia, this is the first domestic prosthesis with an innovative geometric hand grip design. The "Grasp" active working attachment was launched into mass production by MPO Metallist of the Rostec State Corporation. It allows a person with a prosthesis to perform the smallest movements: sewing with a needle, painting with a brush, hammering nails, working with a screwdriver, and so on.

Our developers were able to not only replicate the mechanism of action of the German model, but also create a more durable product. We made "Grasp" from domestic material - corrosion-resistant steel. Currently, the volume of upper limb prosthetics in our country is about 4 thousand products per year. At the same time, there are no domestic analogues of "Grasp" in Russia. We are ready to fully meet the needs for such prostheses and enable people with upper limb amputations to maintain social and domestic skills, continue to actively live and work.
Eduard Yanushenko, General Director of MPO Metallist

The prosthesis weighs only 300 grams and is produced by investment casting. Despite being mass-produced, one of the production stages of "Grasp" is still done manually: processing its surface to a mirror shine.

According to the manufacturers, Metallist currently has more than 80 new projects at various stages of development and testing. This year, in addition to "Grasp", a new "Toucan" children's hand prosthesis has already been launched into mass production.

Also, in 2024, MPO Metallist began producing the "Grif" traction prosthesis for upper limbs for adults and the "Kometa" bionic module with a built-in microprocessor for lower limb prosthetics.
