Nuclear weapons for Belarus and Russia are a deterrent, said the head of the republic, Alexander Lukashenko. This is how he answered the question of why the countries are holding joint exercises using non-strategic (tactical) nuclear weapons.

He noted that the current tactical nuclear weapons are many times more powerful than the bombs that the United States dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Thousands and thousands of people will die from one explosion, Lukashenko added.

Last year, Russia deployed its tactical weapons on the territory of the republic. In December 2023, Lukashenko said that nuclear warheads had been delivered to the training ground, they are in their places, "in good condition."
