The largest project in Russia and Turkey: A transport lock has been installed at the Akkuyu NPP

Equipment for the reactor will be delivered through the lock

Work continues in Turkey to prepare the first power unit of the Akkuyu NPP for launch. Workers have installed a transport lock through which high-tech equipment necessary for the operation and maintenance of the reactor plant will be delivered, the Rosatom press service reported.

The transport lock is a cylindrical chamber 14 m long, which is closed on both sides. This ensures the tightness of the reactor compartment.

What equipment will be delivered through the lock:

  • steam generators
  • upper reactor block
  • main circulation pumps
  • first circuit pipelines

When the first power unit is launched, spent nuclear fuel will be taken through the lock and new fuel will be delivered.

In the coming days, we plan to begin tensioning the prestressing system of the protective shell
Sergey Butskikh, Director of the Akkuyu NPP

The system consists of metal cables that strengthen the strength of the reactor's internal protective shell, he explained.

Earlier, the head of the Turkish Ministry of Energy, Alparslan Bayraktar, stated that the nuclear plant will be launched before the end of 2024.
