AI scammers extort money using fabricated voices of SUSU management

Students and faculty of the university are asked to be vigilant and not to negotiate

South Ural State University has faced attacks by scammers. They call and write in social networks and messengers to students and teachers of the university, extorting money and personal data. For their purposes, the attackers use simulated voices of the rector, vice-rectors, directors of institutes and higher schools.

The university urges you to be vigilant and not to enter into negotiations with attackers, no matter who they pretend to be.

Please do not enter into negotiations and do not provide criminals with your personal data and bank details. We remind you that neither the president nor the rector of SUSU send official messages via popular messengers. Be careful: in all cases, you must use SUSU corporate mail.

The "First Technical" previously wrote about this type of fraud. It is difficult to suspect deception: when generating an AI application, fragments of the voice and even expressions in the person's speech from his voice messages are used.

Scammers also use other personal information from hacked correspondence and mailboxes for their own purposes: photos of documents, passports, bank cards, and so on.

Those who received such messages with a request to send money or give their details for some banking operation from relatives, friends or acquaintances, security experts advise not to rush to immediately fulfill the request. The fact that you were sent a message asking for help, an audio recording, bank cards and a passport is not proof that you are communicating with a scammer.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, a record number of IT crimes were registered in 2023 — 677 thousand. More than half of the registered crimes committed with the help of IT technologies belong to the categories of serious and especially serious crimes. The number of crimes using the Internet, mobile communications and plastic cards has grown the most. To stop this, the Criminal Code of Russia will soon toughen the punishment for crimes committed using IT technologies.
