Lithuania to start confiscating cars with Russian license plates from March 11

Latvian Customs names cars with Russian registration that will not be confiscated

The Customs Service of Latvia has announced that from March 11, cars registered in Russia will be confiscated in the country as part of EU sanctions.

The agency explained that vehicles need to be re-registered in Lithuania or taken out of the country. At the same time, the measure does not apply to cars transiting to and from the Kaliningrad region. But they can be in Lithuania for 24 hours.

In the fall of 2023, the European Commission announced that personal transport falls under anti-Russian sanctions. Cars with Russian license plates were banned from entering the Eurozone, even for tourism purposes.

Since February 15, Latvia has started confiscating cars with Russian license plates. In addition, drivers are fined up to 2 thousand euros. Cars transiting are an exception, but they can cross the border of Latvia only once.
