An innovative solution is being developed within the walls of the Belarusian State Medical University that will help thousands of people. Research is underway in the field of creating a drug that can prevent tooth decay.
A fairly new project that we launched in early January is the development of drugs or a vaccine against tooth decay. Together with our chemists, as well as the National Academy of Sciences, we are trying to create a drug that will prevent the attachment of Streptococcus mutans microorganisms to the hard tissue of the tooth and the development of caries. It is these mutant streptococci that produce lactic acid, which leads to the formation of tartar, enamel destruction and caries.
The development will be useful, as Rubnikovich noted, not only to residents of the republic, who have become more aware of their health and often go for preventive check-ups to the dentist. In previous years, they accounted for 20–30% of the total number of patients, now - about 50%. It may also be in demand among medical tourists who come to get their teeth in order from Russia, Latvia and Lithuania.
And this is not the only innovation in dentistry that dentists of the Republic of Belarus are working on. In particular, they have developed a test system for diagnosing periodontal diseases - it is already operating in Minsk and regional polyclinics.
