The West is sawing off the branch it's sitting on: The US bought a record $1.2 billion worth of uranium from Russia and refused to supply it

Germany and Britain are among the top three buyers of uranium from Russia

In 2023, the US bought 702 tons of uranium from Russia for $1.2 billion, which was an all-time high. The data is confirmed by the materials of the US Bureau of Economic Analysis.

In December last year, the US House of Representatives approved a bill banning the purchase of low-enriched uranium from Russia until 2040. At the same time, the Ministry of Energy will have a loophole: in agreement with the Ministry of Trade and the State Department, the department may lift the ban if other sources of uranium are not available to the United States.

Against the background of the introduction of the ban, the Americans increased uranium purchases. Russia took first place in uranium exports to the United States (27%), ahead of France, China, Japan. The previous record was recorded in 2010 - the purchase volume in monetary terms amounted to $1.05 billion.

Germany was in second place in terms of purchases ($677 million). Britain also made it into the top three ($609 million). They are followed by Canada ($530 million), the Netherlands ($498 million).

The US authorities have set a goal to achieve independence from Russia in the field of uranium supplies. Washington wants to cooperate with Japan, Britain, France and Canada, abandoning Russian uranium.
