Nuclear-powered icebreaker "Chukotka" receives second nuclear reactor

Baltic Shipyard continues construction of the nuclear-powered icebreaker "Chukotka"

The Baltic Shipyard (part of USC), located in St. Petersburg, continues the construction of the nuclear icebreaker "Chukotka" of Project 22220. Specialists have received the second nuclear reactor "RITM-200", the corporation's press service reported.

The icebreaker's reactor plant includes two "RITM-200" reactors with a thermal capacity of 175 MW. The main advantage of this plant is its compactness and efficiency.

Engineers at the Baltic Shipyard are creating a dual-draft nuclear-powered ship with increased speed and improved icebreaking capability. The "Chukotka" is expected to be delivered to the customer in 2026.

The nuclear-powered ship was laid down in 2020 and is the fourth in the series of Project 22220. The customer is FSUE "Atomflot" (part of Rosatom).

Earlier, the nuclear-powered missile submarine cruiser "Generalissimus Suvorov" of Project 955 "Borei-A" joined the Pacific Fleet. It was built at the "Sevmash" plant.
