A number of bills have been introduced to the lower house of parliament that will tighten the punishment for leakage of personal data of citizens, said Andrey Turchak, Deputy Secretary of the General Council of the United Russia party.
According to him, many companies in Russia do not protect them properly. The measures of responsibility introduced in the country do not encourage legal entities to ensure the security of the infrastructure on which the data is stored. Thus, as a result of leaks, the damage amounted to 8 billion rubles last year alone.
Deputies propose to amend the Code of Administrative Offenses and the Criminal Code of Russia, according to which the punishment will depend on the amount of "leaked" information. Officials will have to pay up to 2 million rubles for the leak, and companies - up to 15 million rubles.
If the data of Russian citizens falls into another country, the violator faces 8 years in prison. In the case when the data is stolen by an organized group, the punishment will be up to 10 years in prison. And those who resell the data of Russians face 5 years of imprisonment and a large fine.
Earlier it was reported that in the first half of 2023, almost 200 thousand client records of users from Russia got into the Network. Most often, leaks occurred in large companies that collected customer data through bonus programs.
