Employees of the St. Petersburg Scientific-Production Association of Special Materials (NPO SM) have developed a set of differentiated armor (KDB) - mounted armor for KamAZ, Ural, and UAZ Patriot vehicles used by Russian military personnel. The kit has been refined based on combat experience.
Deputy Director of NPO SM Anton Brovkin stated that the KDB is suitable for any army automotive equipment.
Operational practice has confirmed that the protection does not affect maintenance or driving
The armor is represented by mounted parts made of high-tech material - ultra-molecular polyethylene, which provides protection according to class BR3-BR4. In particular, the driver and passengers of vehicles are reliably protected from pistol fire, AK-74 and AKM fire, sniper rifle shots, as well as from shell fragments.
The plates are installed with a regular screwdriver on the cab, radiator, crankcase, compartment where the battery is located, fuel tank, and hood.
The mounted armor has a relatively light weight - 650 kg. At the same time, the weight of the KAMAZ-53501 is 8550 kg with a carrying capacity of 12 tons. Consequently, the weight of the KDB is only 5% of the carrying capacity of the vehicle.
It was previously reported that Rostec plans to refine domestic light armored vehicles by introducing FPV drones into standard armament.
