Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree granting Russian citizens the opportunity to use a digital ID instead of a traditional paper passport. This step is driven by the desire to simplify interaction with government services.
According to the text of the decree, citizens will be able to present information contained in identity documents in electronic form through the mobile application "Unified Portal of State and Municipal Services" ("Gosuslugi"). This will make it possible to use the digital version of the passport in situations stipulated by the government of the Russian Federation with the approval of the FSB.
The head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Maksut Shadaev, previously emphasized that the technology allowing the use of a digital version of the passport in most situations has already been developed.
You upload a photo from your biometric passport to your smartphone, then a QR code is generated, which you present.
The text of the decree defines the cases and procedure for using a digital identity document instead of a paper one.
