Myanmar May Build a Nuclear Power Plant Using Russian Technology. Its Capacity Will Be Up to 300 MW

Rosatom Signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Myanmar

IAEA Deputy Director General Mikhail Chudakov announced that a nuclear power plant with a capacity of up to 300 MW could be built in Myanmar using Russian technology.

«We discussed [the nuclear power plant project] with them [representatives of Myanmar] in Sochi at Atomexpo-2022. Their power grids are small, they do not allow for large nuclear power. Since, in accordance with the creation of infrastructure, nuclear power, as a large source of electricity, must be reserved and occupy no more than 10-20% of the capacity of existing networks, then [a nuclear power plant with a capacity] of up to 300 MW can be built in Myanmar,» – said Mikhail Chudakov.

Earlier, the head of Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, reported that Myanmar intends to reach legally significant agreements with Rosatom in 2023 on the construction of nuclear power plants of various capacities.
