Russia is developing a new air defense format: crews will cover drone flight routes at different altitudes

War correspondent Poddubny: The defense architecture will be based on mobile groups, radars, and a unified interaction system

A new air defense system is being formed in Russia, which will be built on a network of mobile fire groups, detection means, and the distribution of tasks among various units. The concept involves creating multi-level protection with the ability to engage aerial targets at different altitudes.

The development of a new approach to combating unmanned aerial vehicles was announced by war correspondent and Deputy General Director of VGTRK Evgeny Poddubny.

According to him, the new system will include mobile fire groups that will operate not only in areas where important objects are located, but also along the presumed routes of drones. Units will receive different tasks depending on the flight altitude and type of aerial target.

Technically, the new concept is close to the principle of layered defense, where detection, tracking, and engagement of targets are distributed among several levels. This system can use mobile radar stations, electronic warfare systems, short-range assets, and specialized drone interceptors.

For several years, Russia has been developing mobile protection against small aerial targets. Troops are receiving new means of detecting and countering drones, and manufacturers are improving short-range systems. Existing solutions include Pantsir family anti-aircraft missile-gun systems, Tor short-range systems, mobile radars, and electronic warfare systems.

Three most important things. These are radars – means of detecting drones, mobility, strictly speaking, of fire groups. And the third is interaction between various units. As soon as these three conditions start working, the problem of enemy drones is significantly reduced. We are now increasing the production of interceptors and practicing interaction.

The main difference of the new approach lies in the transition from protecting individual objects to creating a distributed network of mobile units. This structure should respond faster to the emergence of new aerial threats and cover various altitude ranges.
