The MiG-21 was supposed to be history, but got a second life: all about the fate of the "eternal" fighter jet

How the legendary machine was turned into an almost modern MiG-21 2000 aircraft

Even those far from aviation know the MiG-21. This fighter became one of the most mass-produced and recognizable aircraft in the history of jet aviation. It served for decades in various countries, participated in conflicts, and became a symbol of an entire era. But in the 1990s, the legendary machine got a chance for a new life. The Israeli MiG-21 2000 program was supposed to turn the time-tested aircraft into a more modern combat fighter – without creating a completely new machine. We tell you how a simple delta-wing fighter became the most mass-produced supersonic aircraft on the planet and why, half a century later, it is still being modernized.

How a legend of world aviation was born

The MiG-21 is one of the most recognizable combat aircraft in history. Its silhouette with a delta wing and a thin, as if hand-sculpted fuselage, is unmistakable. The machine was developed in the mid-1950s by designers Artyom Mikoyan, Mikhail Gurevich, and Anatoly Brunov. The prototype first took to the sky on January 9, 1956. Then there was a long journey: competition with the Sukhoi fighter, refinement of the capricious engine, military trials — and, finally, adoption into service in late October 1960.

The main intrigue in creating the aircraft was the delta wing itself. Such a wing provided the necessary rigidity and strength with a small mass, but it turned out to be incredibly difficult to assemble: the spars had to be bent manually at different angles in each section. The designers found an elegant engineering solution — to place the main spar at an angle to the fuselage and reinforce it with a short transverse beam. It was this simple solution that allowed the MiG-21 to be mass-produced.

MiG-21 in battles in Asia and the Middle East

The fighter saw its baptism of fire in Vietnam in 1966, where it fought on equal terms with the heavy American F-4 "Phantom". During the war, the North Vietnamese Air Force lost about 86 MiG-21s, while American aviation lost 330 aircraft. The "twenty-first" also fought in the Middle East: in 1966, a pair of Syrian MiG-21s destroyed two Israeli Mirage IIIs in an aerial battle, losing only one of their own aircraft. And in 1973, Soviet pilot Gennady Eliseev, in a MiG-21SM, performed the world's first supersonic ramming, intercepting an Iranian reconnaissance aircraft that had violated the USSR border. The pilot died and was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

In total, fighters of the MiG-21 family were in service or fought in more than 30 countries — from Cuba and Angola to India and Finland. This made it the most mass-produced supersonic fighter in the world. The largest operator was the Indian Air Force — they flew MiG-21s in 27 squadrons and officially bid farewell to the machine only in September 2025, having flown over 1.5 million hours on the "twenty-firsts" in total. In Russia, the aircraft was decommissioned back in 1998, but abroad — in Romania, Iraq, Vietnam, African and Middle Eastern countries — it flew for a long time.

A chance for a second life: why the Israelis made the MiG-21 2000

While some MiG-21s were living out their days, others got a chance for a second life. In the 1990s, the Israeli company Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) developed a deep modernization program for the MiG-21bis, called MiG-21-2000. The essence of the idea was simple: if a country or army already has a time-tested airframe, why buy a new aircraft if you can update the old one?

The program began with extending the service life of the airframe structure itself, as there was simply no point in installing new avionics in an aircraft with an exhausted service life. After that, an Israeli-developed Elta EL/M-2032 pulse-Doppler radar was installed in the nose of the fighter. The cockpit was completely changed. Engineers installed multi-functional displays and a helmet-mounted target designation system, which increased the pilot's situational awareness. The instrument panel's layout became similar to the cockpits of modern Western fighters.

The armament also changed. The main weapon for close air combat on the modernized machine became the highly maneuverable Israeli Python 3 missiles. In addition to fighter tasks, the MiG-21-2000 gained attack aircraft capabilities: it could carry a pair of electronic warfare containers, a reconnaissance container, or up to three Griffin guided bombs. From a pure interceptor fighter, the machine was transformed into a multi-role aircraft.

The first updated fighter was shown to the public in 1993 at the Paris Air Show. The program was actively promoted for export to Eastern European countries. A similar, though not identical, modernization path along the Israeli line — jointly with the Romanian firm Aerostar (formerly IAR Brasov) and the Elbit concern — was also undertaken for the MiG-21s of the Romanian Air Force: about a hundred machines were brought up to the standard known as Lancer, with the same EL/M-2032 radar station and Python 3 missiles on board.

The airframe, dating back to the mid-1950s, flew with late 20th-century electronics and approached the capabilities of light fourth-generation fighters such as the French Mirage 2000 and the American F-16.

MiG-21 analogues in the world

The Soviet fighter also had another clone — the Chinese J-7. Beijing received a license for the MiG-21 in the early 1960s, and after relations with Moscow cooled, it continued to produce the aircraft independently, reverse-engineering missing documentation. The J-7 (exported under the designation F-7) was assembled for so long that production stretched for almost half a century: the first flight of the Chinese copy took place in January 1966, and the last production model left the factory in May 2013.

The final batch of these machines — F-7BGI fighters — was received by the Bangladesh Air Force, where the aircraft were supplied until 2013. Bangladesh became the last country for which new aircraft of the MiG-21 line were built at all, albeit under a Chinese brand. In total, China produced over 2400 units of J-7/F-7 in various modifications — the machine was the backbone of the Chinese Air Force for many years, and then spread to the armies of Pakistan, North Korea, Iran, Sudan, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, and a number of other countries.
