A major comparison of the S-400 "Triumf" and Patriot: how the Russian system surpasses the American one

The systems have different missions and different philosophies

The S-400 "Triumf" and MIM-104 Patriot surface-to-air missile systems are considered among the most famous complexes in the world. They are regularly compared, but the systems were created with different priorities, which directly affected their characteristics. "Pervyi tekhnicheskii" compared the two systems and identified their main advantages.

S-400 is a universal "umbrella," Patriot is a narrow specialist

The Russian S-400 was created as a universal air and missile defense system . The priority is specifically the interception of strategic aviation aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, as well as high-speed and maneuvering targets.

Patriot was originally designed to combat ballistic missiles, which determined the design of its missiles and radar systems.

Range and speed

Here the S-400 pulls far ahead. The main advantage of the S-400 is its range. The Russian system is capable of engaging aerodynamic targets at distances of up to 380 km, whereas Patriot, even in modern versions, lags by almost half.

The maximum speed of intercepted targets for the S-400 reaches 4,800 m/s, while for Patriot it is about 2,200 m/s, which limits its capabilities against high-speed and hypersonic threats.

Altitudes, firing sector, and vertical launch

The S-400 also wins in terms of its altitude range. It intercepts targets at altitudes starting from 10 meters, while Patriot works effectively from higher altitude bands.

An additional advantage is the vertical launch of missiles, which provides an all-around engagement sector without turning the launcher. Patriot uses inclined launch rails, which narrows the firing sector.

Radars versus combat experience: the strengths of both systems

A key element of the S-400 is the 92N6E multifunction radar with all-round coverage and high resistance to jamming. Patriot's AN/MPQ-53/65 radars have a limited azimuth sector, which requires more complex battery deployment.

At the same time, Patriot has an important advantage: extensive combat experience and PAC-3 missiles with hit-to-kill technology, which implies direct kinetic destruction of the target. In Russian systems, a similar principle has already been implemented in missiles for the S-500.

There is no winner: everything is decided by the concept of use

As a result, we conclude that the S-400 is most effective as part of an integrated layered air defense system, where it performs the role of a long-range "umbrella," while Patriot more often operates as a specialized missile defense asset.

It is precisely the difference in concept, rather than the "lagging behind" of one side, that determines the differences between the systems.

Who uses the S-400 today and where

As of the beginning of 2026, the S-400 "Triumf" is in service with Russia, Belarus, China, India, and Turkey. The republic's authorities, led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, are trying to keep the systems despite strong pressure from the United States.
