The architectural originality of the Crimean Bridge is not its main distinguishing feature. Its peculiarity lies in the engineering solution aimed at interchangeability and durability. Alexander Ostrovsky, a construction engineer and project manager, explained how a well-thought-out engineering and architectural idea is hidden behind the appearance of the bridge.
From an architectural point of view, the Crimean Bridge has no particular uniqueness. But from the point of view of the structure, everything was chosen so that it would be light, interchangeable and, as they say, easy to assemble. And those two incidents proved it. It was very easy to change the spans on the road part of the bridge, because each one is individually replaceable.
Advanced technologies were used during the construction of the transport crossing through the Kerch Strait. In particular, large diameter metal pipes were used, submerged to a significant depth. The prefabricated modular design of the bridge structure ensures its high adaptability.
All design solutions of the Crimean Bridge were aimed at high-speed construction.
Before construction began, large-scale work was carried out by designers, surveyors and archaeologists. Explosives experts were also involved, as the bridge supports were installed in an area where fierce battles took place during the Great Patriotic War. A state commission consisting of more than 50 experts repeatedly visited the construction site.
Up to 15 thousand workers and engineers worked simultaneously on the construction site, working 24/7. During the entire construction period, there were only four non-working days: December 30 and 31 of each year and January 1, 2. There was a shift system. Housing and meals were organized for the bridge builders, and all the necessary conditions were created. People lived with the thought: "We must do it."
A huge team was involved in the construction of the transport crossing through the Kerch Strait, specialists from Moscow and the Far East, Siberia, the Arctic and the Caucasus, as well as Kuban, Crimea and other regions.
Ostrovsky calls the Crimean Bridge the heir to the engineering thought of both modern Russian specialists and Soviet civil engineers.
The Crimean Bridge is the longest bridge in Russia and Europe, it is 19-kilometer-long, with 35-meter arches, the total length of which is more than half a kilometer, with a four-lane highway and a railway part – the grandiose Crimean Bridge was opened exactly 7 years ago – May 15, 2018.
